Google is rolling AI Overviews out across more markets and more query types. How often they appear depends on the country, the language, the device and the intent, so a single global percentage should never be used to forecast traffic for a specific domain.
What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews, previously Search Generative Experience, is a Google feature that generates a direct written answer to a user's query and displays it at the very top of the results page, above every organic link and advertisement. The answer is produced by an AI model built on Gemini, drawing on content from pages Google indexes.
An AI Overview does not appear for every query. Google triggers them mainly on informational, how-to and comparison questions. Transactional queries ("buy Nike trainers") and navigational ones ("facebook.com") still show conventional results. But estimates suggest AI Overviews appear on around half of all queries - an enormous share of traffic.
The data: 92% of citations in Google AI Overviews come from pages in the organic top ten. But 47% of those come from outside the top five. AI has its own selection logic, independent of the exact ranking position.
How AI Overviews affect organic traffic
This is the question that keeps anyone managing SEO traffic awake. The data is ambiguous and depends heavily on the category. In some categories appearing in an AI Overview raises CTR, because the source link is more prominent than a normal organic result. In others the AI Overview answers the question without a click, which reduces traffic to sites.
For B2B companies the consequences are usually less dramatic than for publishers and e-commerce. B2B decision-makers click through to sources to verify information and get to know a company before deciding to make contact. But sites not cited in AI Overviews for key category queries lose some of that traffic to competitors who are.
How Google selects sources for AI Overviews
An AI Overview is not the output of a separate algorithm - Google uses its existing ranking as the base. A page has to be in the top ten for a given query to be considered as an AI Overview source at all. Conventional SEO therefore remains a necessary condition.
But being in the top ten does not guarantee citation. Google selects from those pages the ones whose content is most citable - specific, directly answering the question and well structured. A page ranking eighth with an excellently written paragraph that answers the query head-on can be cited more often than a page ranking second with generic content.
Which query types generate AI Overviews
| Query type | AI Overview? | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Informational / "what is" | Often | "what is AI Visibility", "how does GPT work" |
| How-to | Often | "how to optimise a site for AI", "how to choose a CRM" |
| Comparison | Often | "HubSpot vs Salesforce", "SEO vs GEO" |
| Local / category | Less often | "SEO agency London", "accountant Manchester" |
| Transactional | Rarely | "buy a laptop", "book a hotel" |
| Navigational | No | "facebook login", "amazon.com" |
What to do to appear in Google AI Overviews
- 1Get the SEO fundamentals right - without a top-ten position for your target queries there is no AI Overview. That is the entry condition and it cannot be bypassed. If you do not rank, start with SEO.
- 2Optimise content for citation - write paragraphs that can be lifted without context and stand as a self-contained answer. The first sentence of a section should carry the main proposition. The optimal cited block is 134 to 167 words.
- 3Use headings as questions - question-form headings map directly onto user queries. "How do I choose ERP software?" as an H2 is a direct answer to the query.
- 4Add comparison tables and lists - Google AI Overviews readily cite comparisons, step lists and tables. These formats answer "what are the..." and "how do I, step by step" questions well.
- 5Show dates and an author - content with a visible update date and a named author reads as more current and more credible.
Google has published official guidance on visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode. We work through it point by point in how to optimise for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. If you want to know whether your company appears in AI answers at all, start with an AI visibility audit.
AI Overviews and AI Visibility - what is the difference?
AI Overviews are exclusively a Google feature. AI Visibility, or GEO, is the broader category covering visibility across every AI system: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and others. Optimising for AI Overviews is a subset of a wider AI Visibility strategy.
The key practical difference: AI Overviews require good conventional SEO as their foundation. ChatGPT and Perplexity can ignore your Google position entirely - what counts for them is whether your brand is discussed online in the right context. A complete AI Visibility strategy has to address both paths.
How to check whether your company appears in AI Overviews
Go to Google and enter the queries you think your buyers ask. If an AI Overview appears, check whether your page is among the cited sources - they show as cards to the side or as links within the text. Test at least ten different queries from your category. Note who is cited instead of you; that is your competition in AI.
How to monitor visibility in Google AI Overviews
Monitoring AI Overviews is harder than tracking conventional SEO positions, because Google provides no dedicated data in Search Console. Several methods do allow systematic tracking, though. Below is the short version - the full treatment, including a Looker Studio dashboard, is in a separate guide: how to track visibility in Google AI Overviews.
- 1Google Search Console - check the CTR metric for key phrases. A sudden CTR drop while impressions stay stable or rise can indicate that an AI Overview has taken the traffic. It is an indirect but important signal.
- 2Manual checking - build a list of 20 to 30 key queries for your category and check weekly which of them trigger an AI Overview and whether your page is cited. Record the results in a spreadsheet.
- 3ZipTie.dev - a specialist tool for monitoring Google AI Overviews. It tracks automatically whether your page is cited for selected key phrases.
- 4Semrush AI Visibility Tracker - a Semrush module showing visibility in AI Overviews for tracked keywords.
- 5Nightwatch - an SEO tool with AI Overviews tracking, integrating conventional position monitoring with AI visibility in one dashboard.
A tip: in Google Search Console, filter by search type and check Search Appearance. Google has been rolling out partial AI Overviews data in the Search results section. The feature is being deployed gradually, so check whether it is available on your account.
AI Overviews and Google AI Mode - what is the difference?
Google launched AI Mode, a separate tab in the search engine offering a fully conversational AI experience. Unlike AI Overviews, which appear above the organic results, AI Mode is a separate interface with no conventional organic links. That means the only route to visibility in AI Mode is being cited by the AI - there are no links a user could click independently of the answer.
| Attribute | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above results in standard Google | A separate Google tab |
| Organic links | Yes - visible alongside the AI Overview | No - no conventional results |
| How to reach the user | SEO plus optimisation for citation | Only through citation in the AI |
| Effect on CTR | Depends on the category | Critical - no citation means no visibility |

Frequently asked questions
Which pages make it into Google AI Overviews?
Over 92% of citations in AI Overviews come from pages already in the Google organic top ten.
Do AI Overviews reduce CTR?
It depends on the category. On informational queries they can reduce traffic, but in B2B they often act as a recommendation that encourages deeper verification.
What are Google AI Overviews and how do they work?
Google AI Overviews are generated summaries that can appear above the classic results for a share of queries. Their availability and frequency depend on the market, the language, the device and the user's intent.
How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?
To appear in AI Overviews: (1) rank in the Google organic top ten for the phrase, (2) structure content in a question-and-answer format, (3) use structured data, (4) create expert content with distinctive data. 92% of AI Overviews citations come from pages already in the top ten.
Can visibility in Google AI Overviews be tracked?
Yes. Google has been gradually adding AI Overviews data to Search Console. You can also monitor through tools such as ZipTie.dev, Semrush AI Visibility Tracker and Nightwatch, or by tracking changes in CTR and impressions - a sudden CTR drop at a stable position can mean an AI Overview has taken the traffic.
How do I check AI Overview visibility step by step?
Step 1: enter an informational query from your category into Google. Step 2: check whether an AI Overview section appears at the top of the page. Step 3: if it does, check whether your page is listed as a source, either in the side cards or as links in the text. Step 4: repeat for 10 to 20 queries. Step 5: use ZipTie or Semrush to automate it.
