Your prospective buyer is looking for project management software. They do not type a keyword into Google. They open ChatGPT and ask: "What are the best project management tools for a construction company?" Within seconds they have a list of five specific solutions with a short description of each. Your company is not on that list.

AI assistants are already used in research, but global statistics do not prove that buyers in your category use them. Confirm the buying situations and the questions first, then check observed brand presence within an explicitly described sample.

What is AI Visibility?

AI Visibility is the degree to which your company, product or service appears in answers generated by artificial intelligence systems - ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude - when users ask questions related to your category or offer.

Unlike a Google position, AI Visibility is not measured by rank in a results list. It is measured by presence or absence in the narrative: whether AI names your brand when someone asks about solving the problem you solve.

The key difference: in Google you can rank seventh and still be seen. In AI you are either in the answer or you are not. There is no "almost", only presence or absence.

How AI decides who to recommend

AI systems have no ranking in the search-engine sense. They generate answers from knowledge built during training and, for models with web access, from current page data. Several factors shape who AI recommends:

  • Brand mentions across the web - articles, blogs, industry publications, reviews and discussion forums
  • The quality and structure of content on your own site - whether AI can easily understand what you do and for whom
  • Presence on social platforms and in industry media
  • Distinctive, citable content - proprietary data, case studies and expert commentary
  • Internal and external linking (conventional SEO still matters, but less)

An Ahrefs study covering 75,000 brands showed that brand mentions correlate with AI visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks. The strongest signals are mentions on YouTube (correlation around 0.74), Reddit and Wikipedia. Domain Rating, the traditional measure of SEO strength, correlates at just 0.27.

AI Visibility and SEO: how they differ

This is the most common question we hear from marketers and business owners. The short answer: SEO and AI Visibility are two separate games with an area of overlap - but only an area.

An important observation: 92% of citations in Google AI Overviews come from pages in the Google top ten. But 47% of those come from pages below position five. AI has its own selection logic, independent of the conventional ranking - and good content on a page ranking eighth can be cited more often than weak content ranking second.

Why AI Visibility matters more in B2B than in e-commerce

In B2B a purchase decision takes weeks or months. At the problem-recognition stage, decision-makers increasingly reach for AI as a first pointer: "Which ERP systems suit a manufacturer with 50 employees?" or "Who would you recommend as an IT security auditor?" If you are not there, you never reach the preliminary list of suppliers under consideration - before you get a chance at a conversation.

In e-commerce a user can return to Google and browse shops. In B2B, once AI has named three specific companies as trustworthy in a category, the odds of a decision-maker looking beyond that list are low. The cost of invisibility in B2B is proportional to the value of the contracts you never won.

Which B2B categories lose the most

Our analyses suggest the most exposed categories are those where buyers compare many suppliers before deciding:

  • Software and SaaS - ChatGPT readily recommends specific tools
  • Financial and advisory services - buyers ask about law firms, advisers and accountants
  • Marketing and agencies - "which SEO agency is good?" is a real query
  • IT services and cybersecurity - decision-makers look for trusted partners through AI
  • B2B training and education - "where can I learn project management?"
  • Commercial real estate and developers - investors and tenants ask AI about reputation

How to measure your AI Visibility

The basic method is manual testing: open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask the questions your buyer might ask, and check whether your company appears. That is a good start, but it has limits - AI gives different answers each time, and you cannot see how you compare with competitors.

Systematic AI Visibility measurement combines brand presence, the context of each recommendation, the sources cited and an assessment of the content. At AiVisible we deliver it within a paid Snapshot or audit, after a free category-fit assessment.

Before you optimise anything, establish the baseline. We assess category fit free of charge; the full report and benchmark come from a Snapshot or an audit.

Where to start building AI Visibility

Three things you can do within a week without outside help:

  1. 1Test manually - ask ChatGPT and Perplexity five questions your buyer might ask. Note whether and how your company appears in the answers.
  2. 2Check the quality of your site content - do the home page and service pages clearly answer "what do you do, for whom, and why does it matter"? The content has to be intelligible to AI.
  3. 3Build mentions - write a guest article for an industry publication, answer questions on Reddit or relevant forums, and ask clients for reviews on Google and LinkedIn.

AI Visibility is not a one-off exercise. It is a strategy for brand presence in a channel that will only grow in importance. The best time to start was a year ago. The second best is now.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI Visibility?

AI Visibility is the degree to which your company, product or service appears in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, when users ask questions related to your category or offer.

How does AI Visibility differ from SEO?

SEO optimises visibility in the Google results list, meaning a ranking position. AI Visibility concerns presence in answers generated by AI systems - you are either in the answer or you are not. The key signal in SEO is backlinks; in AI Visibility it is brand mentions and content citability.

How do I check my AI Visibility?

The basic method is manually testing a handful of buying questions and recording the complete answers. Systematic measurement requires a fixed scope, documented context, a versioned method and a comparison matched to the category.

How quickly do AI Visibility efforts show results?

The first changes are usually observable two to four months after content work and external mention-building begin. That is faster than conventional SEO at three to six months, though it depends on the category and the intensity of the work.

Which categories lose most from poor AI Visibility?

The most exposed are B2B categories where buyers compare suppliers: SaaS and software, financial and advisory services, marketing agencies, IT services, B2B training and commercial real estate. In these categories decision-makers increasingly ask AI for recommendations before making a purchase decision.
