In August 2023, researchers at Princeton published a paper introducing the term GEO - Generative Engine Optimization. They described the problem: more and more searches end in an AI answer rather than a list of links. Websites lose traffic because the user gets an answer without clicking. The question was how to get your content into those answers. That is GEO.
GEO moved beyond academic discussion because generated answers became part of search and research. How much of a priority it is for a specific B2B company still depends on how its buyers behave, the value of the decision and how well its advantages can be documented.
A definition of Generative Engine Optimization
GEO is the set of actions aimed at increasing the probability that your company's content is included, cited or attributed in answers generated by AI systems - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude - when users ask questions related to your category, product or service.
GEO does not replace SEO; it complements it. The difference is fundamental: SEO optimises for an algorithm that ranks pages, GEO optimises for a model that generates an answer. Two different logics requiring different signals.
How generative engines choose what to cite
AI systems have no single ranking algorithm as Google does. But research has revealed several recurring patterns. The most important: AI prefers content that can be lifted out as a self-contained, credible answer. The optimal length of a cited passage is 134 to 167 words - detailed enough to be useful, concise enough to be usable.
The second key signal is the citability of the content. AI looks for specific data with an attributed source, definitions in an "X is..." format, distinctive observations unavailable elsewhere, and lists answering "what are the best..." or "how do I..." questions.
Five key GEO signals that genuinely matter
- 1Passage citability - do your paragraphs read like an answer that can be cut and pasted? Write in blocks of 130 to 170 words, each with one clear proposition. The first sentence of each paragraph should carry the main point.
- 2Brand mentions beyond your own site - Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, industry publications and Wikipedia. The Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands showed mentions correlate with AI visibility three times more strongly than links. YouTube is the strongest signal, at 0.74.
- 3A question-and-answer structure - headings phrased as questions ("How...", "What is...", "Why...") map directly onto the queries users put to AI. AI generates answers to questions, so your content should share that structure.
- 4Author and brand authority - a byline with a name, a publication date and a link to the author's profile. AI prefers content attributed to identifiable experts. A missing author is one of the most common mistakes in B2B content.
- 5Proprietary data and distinctive observations - your own research, reports and statistics from your practice. AI cites unique data because it cannot find it elsewhere. This is the strongest long-term GEO signal.

What GEO does not do - the limits of the method
GEO does not guarantee citation - AI systems are non-deterministic, and the same content can be cited for one query and skipped for another. GEO does not substitute for a good product or a good reputation: AI learns from public signals, so poor reviews and negative mentions lower your standing. And GEO is not a one-off exercise, because models are updated regularly, which requires continuous monitoring.
How to start implementing GEO - four first steps
- 1Audit the current state - check manually in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini whether your company appears in answers to questions from your category. Note who appears instead of you.
- 2Optimise site content - rewrite key pages so every paragraph is a self-contained answer to one specific question. Add definitions ("AI Visibility is..."), statistics with sources and top-N lists.
- 3Build external mentions - write expert articles for industry publications, answer questions on LinkedIn and specialist forums, and ask clients for reviews that describe your specialisation.
- 4Adjust the site technically - make sure AI crawlers can reach your site (GPTBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt). Add bylines to articles, an update date, and Person and Article schema.
llms.txt - a standard worth knowing about
llms.txt is an emerging proposal for a text index of a site's most important content. It can help tools that deliberately read it, but it is not an equivalent of robots.txt, not a standard Google requires, and not a confirmed visibility factor.

The large majority of B2B companies still have no GEO strategy at all. That is both a problem - they lose leads to competitors who are acting - and an opportunity, because entering now, while competition is low, buys a lead of several months that is hard to close.
