2025 was a year of experiments - B2B companies started noticing traffic from AI, but most treated it as a curiosity. 2026 is the year of normalisation: AI search becomes a lead acquisition channel with its own budget, metrics and strategy. Here is the data and the forecasts to help you plan sensibly.

The state of AI search entering 2026

Public data on platform scale uses different definitions, periods and markets. We do not publish our own estimate of decision-maker adoption without representative research. What is authoritative for a company is measurement of its own category, plus data from sales conversations, analytics and the CRM.

Trend 1: platform divergence - there is no single strategy

The Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands showed that only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same queries. AI platforms have different sources, different selection algorithms and different behaviour. In 2026 we see a growing need for per-platform optimisation: content for Google AIO (strong organic position plus passage optimisation), content for ChatGPT (Wikipedia, Reddit, domain authority) and content for Perplexity (citations, forums, reviews).

Trend 2: AI as a buying agent

Anthropic and OpenAI launched agentic features - AI that does not only answer questions but performs tasks: booking, comparing offers, submitting forms. In 2026 that accelerates. For B2B it means your site has to be legible not only to people but to AI agents doing research. Sites with clear calls to action, prices and JSON-LD structure will be favoured by buying agents.

Perplexity launched Perplexity Shopping, a product aggregator where AI compares offers and recommends a purchase itself. Equivalent B2B-focused tools are coming. Companies building AI Visibility now will be ready for that shift before competitors notice it.

In conventional SEO the long tail - hundreds of niche queries - was a strategy for smaller firms. In AI search the model generates an answer to every query; there is no page two and no low-competition long tail. AI either knows you or it does not. That shifts the emphasis from content volume to depth of authority: a better strategy is being a decisive expert in a narrow niche than a diffuse player in a broad category.

Trend 4: proprietary data and research as a moat

AI cannot cite data that is not in its sources. Companies publishing their own research, reports and sector data build a durable advantage - their distinctive numbers are cited repeatedly by other sources, which are in turn cited by AI. In 2026, investing in an annual report, a sector benchmark or a client survey has a calculable return in AI Visibility, not only in PR.

Trend 5: AI Visibility as a board-level metric

In 2025 AI Visibility was a marketing metric. In 2026 it enters the board dashboard alongside NPS and MRR. A rising share of leads from the AI channel, improving lead quality and growing competitive pressure make it impossible to ignore strategically. We expect standard frameworks for measuring AI Share of Voice in B2B to emerge, analogous to share of voice in traditional marketing.

What this means for your company

  • Start measuring now - a baseline from early 2026 becomes your reference point a year from now
  • Do not wait for perfect tooling - manual tests in ChatGPT and Perplexity give a real picture
  • Invest in content with proprietary data - the most durable AI Visibility asset
  • Optimise your entity - a consistent company identity across the web is the foundation everything else rests on
  • Track platform changes - ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google change algorithms quarterly; subscribe to sector newsletters

A practical step for today: run a benchmark. Check your visibility and that of three direct competitors in ChatGPT and Perplexity for five key queries. That benchmark, six months from now, will show who won the race to AI visibility in your category.
