Brand mentions or backlinks: what really counts for AI visibility?

SEO spent years treating backlinks as the main currency of authority. AI has different priorities. The data, and what it changes about how visibility gets built.

For twenty years one thing in SEO was certain: if you want rankings, get links. A link from an authoritative site signals that Google can trust you. But Google results and AI results are starting to live separate lives - and for AI, links matter surprisingly little.

Ahrefs published a study covering 75,000 brands. The finding that changed many marketers' approach: brand mentions correlate with AI visibility three times more strongly than backlinks. Domain Rating, the most widely used measure of SEO strength, correlates with AI visibility at just 0.27. Mentions on YouTube reach 0.74.

The logic is simple once you understand how AI learns. Language models are trained on large bodies of text - articles, discussions, reviews and comments. In that process they learn which brands are "known" as answers to particular questions. Known not through a count of links, but through the frequency and context of appearing in natural language.

If the sentence "company X is a great option for start-ups looking for an accountant" appears across a thousand different pages, forums and articles, an AI system will learn that association. If company X has 200 backlinks but no such mentions, AI may not know about it in the relevant context at all.

The key difference: a link is a signal for a ranking algorithm. A mention is a signal for a language model. Two different learning mechanisms.

What exactly is a brand mention in an AI context?

A brand mention is any appearance of your company name - or a founder's or product's name - in publicly available text on the web: an article, a comment, a discussion, a review or a social post. It does not have to be a link. It does not even have to be favourable, though unfavourable mentions obviously work against you.

The quality of the mention matters. A mention with context ("agency XYZ specialises in SEO for e-commerce and stands out for...") is stronger than a bare list of brands. A mention on a high-traffic, authoritative site is stronger than one on an anonymous blog. And a mention with category context is more valuable than one without.

How to build brand mentions - six practical methods

  1. 1Expert articles in industry publications - write three or four articles a year for the publications your buyers read. Sign them with your full name and complete company information. These are mentions in a high-quality expert context.
  2. 2Activity on Reddit and specialist forums - answer questions from your category. Do not sell, educate. A mention of your company in the context of good advice is gold for AI.
  3. 3YouTube - record five to ten expert videos and name your company explicitly. Transcripts feed model training data, and comments add further mentions.
  4. 4Interviews and podcasts - appearing on industry podcasts and in media interviews produces mentions with high authority. One interview in a widely read publication can generate dozens of secondary mentions as the piece is quoted.
  5. 5Ask clients for descriptive reviews - a review on Google or LinkedIn where the client describes specifically what you helped with is a mention in the context of a natural recommendation. The most valuable kind.
  6. 6Wikipedia and Wikidata - for companies with genuine history and achievements, a Wikipedia article contributes directly to the training data of most AI systems. Hard to achieve, but the highest impact.

No. Links still matter enormously for conventional SEO, and a Google position translates into AI visibility in Google AI Overviews, where 92% of citations come from pages in the organic top ten. Links build Domain Rating, which indirectly shapes Google's trust in your domain - and that shapes Google AI.

The change is that links have stopped being sufficient. A company that built strong SEO over years of link acquisition can be nearly invisible in ChatGPT and Perplexity if nobody talks about it in natural discussion. In an AI Visibility model, building mentions complements SEO rather than replacing it.

How to measure your brand mentions

Basic monitoring tools: Google Alerts (free but limited), Mention or Brandwatch (paid but more complete). Track mentions of the company name, the founder's name and key products or services. Assess the context of each mention - is it favourable, neutral or unfavourable? Does it describe your specialisation?

For AI visibility purposes it is especially important to monitor the high-correlation platforms: YouTube (comments and transcripts), Reddit and LinkedIn. A quarterly audit of those platforms gives a picture of how the brand is perceived by AI systems.

Frequently asked questions

Does a mention without a link have value for AI?

Yes. AI systems learn from natural text. A mention of a company name in an expert context builds Brand Gravity even without a link. In SEO the anchor text matters; in AI Visibility what matters is the context of the sentence around the company name.

Which platforms build brand mentions best?

The highest correlation with AI visibility comes from YouTube (transcripts), Reddit (discussions) and Wikipedia (training data). LinkedIn and respected industry publications are also worth building.

How many brand mentions do I need to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed threshold, but the data suggests companies cited regularly by AI usually have at least several dozen mentions across different contexts and platforms. Quality matters more than count - a mention in a major consultancy's report carries more weight than ten mentions on low-quality forums.

How quickly do brand mentions translate into AI visibility?

AI systems update their knowledge through retraining, which happens every few months. Visible effects from mention-building usually appear two to four months after the work. AI search products such as Perplexity respond faster, since they index content continuously.
