Perplexity is the easiest AI system to audit for brand visibility, because it is the only one that always shows the sources it used. You do not have to guess where a recommendation came from - you can see the exact pages it cited. This guide walks through checking your brand's visibility in Perplexity in about 30 minutes, without any paid tools.
Perplexity matters because it ties the answer to a visible list of sources. That lets you assess brand presence in the narrative and domain presence in the citations separately. How much the channel matters for you has to be judged against your own customer base.
Step 1: prepare the questions your customers actually ask
Do not ask about your brand directly - that tells you nothing about buying visibility. Ask the way a customer who does not yet know you would ask: about the service category, the problem to solve and supplier recommendations.
- Which companies do you recommend for [your service category]?
- Best supplier of [product or service] for B2B companies - who should we choose?
- Compare the leading companies offering [category].
- I am looking for [service category] for [customer's industry]. What do you recommend?
- What are the pros and cons of working with [your brand]? (a test of whether the model knows the brand at all)
Step 2: ask in a clean context
Results are distorted if Perplexity knows your search history. Use a private window without signing in, or clear the thread before each question. Ask every question in a new thread - models adapt later answers to the conversation context.
Step 3: analyse the cited sources, not just the answer
This is the most important step and Perplexity's biggest advantage over other models. Every answer comes with a list of sources. Check three things: whether your site is among the cited sources, which pages are cited when competitors are recommended, and whether the sources about your brand are current.
A plausible scenario: the brand appears in Perplexity, but the source is an old directory listing with an outdated offer. In that case, confirm the error in the complete answer and update the sources, rather than assuming the cause from the mention alone.
Step 4: compare yourself against competitors
A single result means nothing without a reference point. Repeat the same questions and note how often each of your two or three main competitors appears. If a competitor shows up in seven answers out of ten and you appear in one, you now know where the problem is and how large the gap is.
Step 5: record the results in a simple Share of Model template
| Control question | Your brand | Competitor A | Competitor B | Sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended [category] companies | no | yes | yes | competitor site, industry ranking |
| Best B2B supplier of [service] | no | yes | no | competitor case study |
| Comparison of [category] companies | yes | yes | yes | 2021 directory listing (outdated) |
Share of Model is the percentage of answers in which your brand appears. With ten questions and two appearances, that is 20%. Repeat the measurement monthly on the same question set - only the trend shows whether the work is having an effect.
What to do with the results
- 1Brand invisible: start by sharpening the category and offer description on your site, and publish content Perplexity can cite - comparisons, FAQs and data.
- 2Brand visible but from stale sources: update or displace outdated listings by publishing fresh, specific pages about your offer.
- 3Competitors dominate: analyse the sources cited alongside them and build stronger equivalents, such as case studies with numbers and comparison pages.
A full picture may require checking the other models too. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid account to check visibility in Perplexity?
No. The free version of Perplexity is enough for a basic diagnosis. A Pro plan gives access to stronger models and Deep Research mode, but you can check results for buying queries without it.
How often does Perplexity update information about brands?
Perplexity searches the web in real time, so new content can appear in answers within days of being published and indexed. That is considerably faster than the classic ChatGPT, which draws on training data.
Why does Perplexity cite competitors and not me?
The most common reasons: a competitor has content that is easier to cite (specific data, comparisons, FAQs), they appear in industry rankings and round-ups that Perplexity treats as sources, or your site does not clearly define the category and scope of your services.
Do Perplexity results carry over to other AI systems?
Partly. Perplexity and ChatGPT Search both use the live web, so improving citability helps in both. The classic ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude have their own training data, so a full diagnosis requires checking each model separately.
