Your prospective B2B buyer has a question. They do not open Google. They type it into ChatGPT: "Which marketing agencies specialise in B2B?" or "Which consultancy is recommended for mid-sized manufacturers?" A few seconds later they have specific recommendations. If your company is not in that answer, you do not exist for that buyer at the stage where the first decisions are made.

Generative tools are used to research products and suppliers, but how common that behaviour is depends on the industry, the role and the market. The potential of the channel therefore has to be confirmed against questions and data specific to your category, not against a platform's global user count.

If you want a comparable baseline, start with a category-fit assessment. The full result comes from a paid Snapshot or a strategic audit.

Why visibility in ChatGPT matters in B2B

B2B purchase decisions take weeks or months. Before a decision-maker contacts a supplier, they go through a preliminary research phase. That used to mean Google, industry publications and recommendations from peers. Increasingly, the first step is a question to an AI system.

The key difference from conventional SEO: in Google you can rank seventh and still be visible, because the user sees a list and can scroll. In ChatGPT they get a narrative - a concise answer naming specific companies. If you are not named, you do not exist in that answer. There is no "almost", only present or absent.

Do not assume that a strong Google position automatically means the brand appears in ChatGPT answers. That is a hypothesis to be tested on a defined sample for a specific category.

How ChatGPT decides who to recommend

ChatGPT has no ranking in the search-engine sense. It does not crawl pages at the moment of the query unless you are using a version with web access. It generates answers from knowledge built during training on an enormous corpus of web text. That means your visibility in ChatGPT is shaped by what has been written about your company online - articles, blogs, forums, reviews and product descriptions.

An Ahrefs study covering 75,000 brands found that brand mentions correlate with AI visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks. The strongest signals are mentions on YouTube (correlation around 0.74), Reddit and Wikipedia. Domain Rating, the traditional measure of SEO strength, correlates at just 0.27. That is a fundamental shift in the logic of online visibility.

The main factors affecting visibility in ChatGPT

  • Brand mentions across the web - industry articles, blogs, publications, discussion forums and reviews
  • The quality and structure of content on your own site - whether AI can quickly understand what you do and for whom
  • Presence in media and industry publications - citations by recognised authorities
  • Ratings and reviews on third-party platforms such as Google Business Profile, Clutch and G2
  • Unique, citable content - proprietary data, case studies, reports and expert commentary
  • Activity on social platforms, particularly LinkedIn for B2B

An important caveat: ChatGPT with web access behaves somewhat differently, since it can reach current data. Even then, it relies on content that is well indexed and structurally accessible to AI crawlers. That is why optimising for AI systems - Generative Engine Optimization - is becoming a priority alongside conventional SEO.

How to check your company's visibility in ChatGPT manually

Before reaching for specialist tools, you can run a simple manual test. It takes 15 to 20 minutes and gives a first answer to the question: does ChatGPT know your company at all?

Step by step: a manual AI visibility test

  1. 1Open ChatGPT and sign in. Use the most current model available to you.
  2. 2Ask five category questions your buyer might ask. For example: "Which [your industry] companies do you recommend?", "Who leads the market in [your service]?", "Which [tools / agencies / suppliers] are best for [your target customer]?"
  3. 3Record the results: does your company appear? If so, is it named explicitly, described favourably, or listed among the first?
  4. 4Repeat the test in Perplexity and Google Gemini - different models hold different knowledge about your market.
  5. 5Compare the results against two or three main competitors. Ask the same questions, substituting their profile for the industry context.

Answers can differ between runs. A manual test is exploration, not a full measurement. For a real measurement, fix the question set, the number of repetitions, the models, the date and the coding rules in advance, then keep the complete records.

What drives visibility in ChatGPT - the top factors

1. Mentions in industry media

Models learn from the published record of your market. An article about your company in a respected trade publication carries far more weight for AI visibility than a typical SEO-driven link.

2. The quality and completeness of your own site

ChatGPT has to understand what you do, for whom and why. Your site should answer unambiguously: which industries you serve, which problems you solve, what experience you have and who is behind the company. Vague copy in the style of "comprehensive marketing services" is the weakest possible signal. Specific descriptions with numbers, examples and a clear specialisation are far more effective.

3. Structured data (schema.org)

schema.org markup - Organization, Service, FAQ and Article - helps AI systems understand the structure and context of your content. Pages with correctly implemented structured data are interpreted more accurately and referenced more often in answers.

4. Citable, distinctive content

AI readily cites content containing specific data, statistics, definitions or a distinctive perspective. If your company publishes original research, market reports, case studies with numbers or expert analysis, those are natural magnets. Generic content that repeats what is available everywhere adds very little.

5. Reviews on third-party platforms

Reviews on Google Business Profile, Clutch, G2 and industry directories are credibility and popularity signals for AI. In B2B, Clutch (for agencies and IT firms), a LinkedIn company page and a Google Business Profile are usually the most useful.

How to improve visibility in ChatGPT - the first steps

Improving AI visibility is a marathon rather than a sprint - effects typically appear over two to four months. But several actions can start today:

  1. 1Audit the content on your site: check that every service page clearly answers "what" (the service), "for whom" (industry or customer profile), "why you" (advantage and experience) and "how much" (numbers, scale, outcomes).
  2. 2Complete your structured data: implement or verify schema.org Organization, Service and FAQ markup. It is a technical signal that your content is credible and well described.
  3. 3Plan media presence: approach two or three industry publications or specialist writers in your field. A guest article, interview or expert comment is a fast way to build mentions in authoritative sources.
  4. 4Collect reviews on third-party platforms: ask satisfied clients for a review on Google Business Profile or Clutch. Even five to ten reviews register as a popularity and trust signal.
  5. 5Run a benchmark: check how competitors perform in ChatGPT on the same category questions. Understanding why AI recommends them instead of you is the fastest route to improving your own results.

Want to know how your company performs in AI answers? Start with a category-fit assessment, then choose a Snapshot or an audit with an agreed benchmark.

What we typically observe in the data

  • Fewer than 20% of the B2B companies we have assessed appear in ChatGPT answers to questions from their own category
  • Companies with a substantial body of expert content are three to four times more visible in AI than companies without content marketing
  • Agencies and IT companies are the most heavily represented category in AI answers
  • Manufacturing and industrial companies are the least represented - a substantial opening for early movers in those sectors
  • ChatGPT and Perplexity differ significantly in their results, so a diagnosis should cover both

The market is still young, which means the window is open. Companies that invest in AI visibility now will hold an advantage that competitors find hard to close in later years - much like the companies that invested in SEO in 2010 while others still ignored it.

Frequently asked questions

Can my company appear in ChatGPT answers?

Yes, any company can build visibility in ChatGPT. The key factors are mentions across the web (industry articles, reviews, media), the quality of content on your own site, and structured data. Companies with substantial content marketing and a presence in industry media are naturally more visible.

How long before optimisation shows results?

Improvements in AI visibility usually appear over two to four months. That is faster than conventional SEO, which typically takes three to six, but it requires consistent work: creating content, building mentions and improving the technical foundations of the site.

Is visibility in ChatGPT different from visibility in Google?

Yes, they are two different mechanisms. In Google, visibility is a position in a results list. In ChatGPT, you are either named in the narrative or you are not. There is a correlation between Google position and AI visibility, but it is weak. Companies ranking highly in Google often have zero visibility in ChatGPT.

How many AI systems should I monitor?

The minimum is ChatGPT and Perplexity. We generally recommend monitoring four: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Each has a slightly different knowledge base and produces different results for a given market.

Can I check my company's visibility myself?

Yes, you can run a simple manual test: open ChatGPT, ask five category questions and check whether your company appears. The limitation is that AI gives different answers on each run, so a single test is insufficient. A systematic diagnosis needs at least 20 to 30 queries per model plus a competitor benchmark.

How does an AI visibility diagnosis differ from a normal SEO audit?

A conventional SEO audit analyses Google positions, links and technical aspects of the site. An AI visibility diagnosis focuses on how language models perceive your brand - whether they know it, how they describe it and whether they recommend it in your category. It is a separate analysis that complements, rather than replaces, an SEO audit.
